90° South is an installation that recreates the experience of a constantly shifting environment shaped by an unpredictable, emergent topography. Its contemplative and immersive atmosphere allows viewers to observe the slow evolution of a growing landscape.
Echoing early proto-cinematic technologies such as the Panorama and the Magic Lantern, 90° South brings together machine and nature. The immersive architectural space, combined with the miniature framing of the expanding terrain, creates an intimate encounter with a fabricated landscape. Geological processes that typically unfold over millennia are compressed into a perceptible temporal scale, enabling the experience of a phenomenon otherwise beyond human reach.
The installation employs an irrigation system in combination with sodium polyacrylate, a highly absorbent material that dramatically alters its form upon contact with water. A thin layer of polyacrylate is spread across a rounded surface. As water is introduced, the material expands up to 300 times its original volume, reshaping itself and generating subtle undulations. These miniature mountains and valleys are illuminated by a light mounted on a rotating mechanism, casting their shifting silhouettes onto the gallery walls. As the material continues to swell, the contours grow more pronounced, creating the illusion of a vast and slowly transforming terrain.
90° South es una instalación que recrea la experiencia de un entorno en constante transformación, modelado por una topografía emergente e impredecible. Su carácter contemplativo e inmersivo permite al espectador observar la evolución lenta de un paisaje en crecimiento.
Evocando tecnologías proto-cinematográficas tempranas como el Panorama y la Linterna Mágica, 90° South articula un encuentro entre máquina y naturaleza. El espacio arquitectónico envolvente, junto con el efecto de encuadre en miniatura del terreno en expansión, genera una experiencia íntima con un paisaje fabricado. Procesos geológicos que normalmente se despliegan a lo largo de milenios son comprimidos en una escala temporal perceptible, posibilitando la experiencia de un fenómeno que, de otro modo, permanecería fuera del alcance humano.
La instalación utiliza un sistema de irrigación en combinación con poliacrilato de sodio, un material altamente absorbente que modifica drásticamente su forma al entrar en contacto con el agua. Una fina capa de poliacrilato se dispone sobre una superficie curva. Cuando el agua alcanza la superficie, el material se expande hasta 300 veces su volumen original, alterando su estructura y generando sutiles ondulaciones. Las siluetas de estas montañas y valles en miniatura son iluminadas por una luz montada sobre un mecanismo rotatorio y proyectadas sobre las paredes de la galería. A medida que el material continúa expandiéndose, los contornos se vuelven más pronunciados, creando la ilusión de un vasto territorio en lenta transformación.
