Ruina #1. Digital C-print, 60’’ x 60’’
Huemul Series emerged from repeated visits to Huemul Island while filming La Isla de Vidrio. During these field trips, it became evident that the ruins of Proyecto Huemul were rapidly disappearing—slowly absorbed by the island’s landscape and eroded by more than seventy years of exposure to Patagonia’s extreme climate. To this day, there have been no sustained official efforts to preserve the site’s historical significance, and earlier attempts to transform the buildings into a cultural destination have failed.
The digital C-prints that comprise the Huemul Series are 3D renders generated from photogrammetric mappings of the ruins. These digital models exist as polygonal meshes, offering nearly infinite vantage points while providing spatial evidence that photography, video, or sound alone cannot capture. Perhaps an intentionally paradoxical act of preservation—an effort to conserve a past that has faded into local curiosity—these prints and models function simultaneously as aesthetic objects and forensic records, holding potential for future research into the entanglements of science, politics, and the state.
Huemul Series surgió a partir de visitas reiteradas a la Isla Huemul durante la filmación de La Isla de Vidrio. En el transcurso de estos recorridos de campo, se hizo evidente que las ruinas del Proyecto Huemul estaban desapareciendo lentamente absorbidas por el paisaje de la isla y erosionadas por más de setenta años de exposición al clima extremo de la Patagonia. Hasta el día de hoy, no ha habido esfuerzos oficiales sostenidos para preservar el valor histórico del sitio, y los intentos previos de convertir los edificios en un destino cultural han fracasado.
Las copias digitales C-print que conforman Huemul Series son renders en 3D generados a partir de mapeos fotogramétricos de las ruinas. Estos modelos digitales existen como mallas poligonales que ofrecen puntos de vista casi infinitos, al tiempo que proporcionan evidencia espacial que la fotografía, el video o el sonido por sí solos no pueden capturar. Quizás son un acto de preservación en vano, un intento de conservar un pasado que se ha transformado en una curiosidad local. Estas imágenes y modelos funcionan simultáneamente como objetos estéticos y registros forenses, con potencial para futuras investigaciones sobre los entrelazamientos entre ciencia, política y Estado.
